Although it’s often the best way of reaching an audience, email marketing is no easy task.

Consider how many emails you have deleted without even reading them. Now imagine how many of your target recipients do the same when you send promotional emails.

Here are some key practices:

The subject line must be interesting and persuasive.

Before you open an email, what do you see first? It’s probably the name of the sender; the next thing you look at is the subject line.

Make the subject line interesting to compel your recipient to open it. If you are hosting a fundraising event over the weekend, it could be something like, “Any weekend plans?”

Don’t stop with merely piquing interest, though.

A persuasive subject line will compel your audience to open your email. Make sure it demonstrates that the email offers actual value to the reader. Customize it to individual recipients; the more specific it feels to the recipient, the better the chances of its being opened.

Tailor content to your target audience.
