Peeks at new, diverse emojis hit social media

Apple apparently has updated its text-message icons to answer complaints regarding lack of representation, but it isn’t really trumpeting it.

Apple has acknowledged for a while now that the emojis that come built into the iPhone’s texting program don’t represent as many races as they should.

Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms,” Katie Cotton, vice president of worldwide corporate communications for Apple, told MTV in March 2014. “There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard.”

Nearly a year after Cotton made those comments, Apple is apparently rolling out a much more diverse set of emoji icons, but you wouldn’t know it through any official word from the tech giant. So far, news about the emojis has come from people who have the beta of Apple’s operating system tweeting about them or sending tips to news organizations.
