No matter how many years one spends in the industry, there are certain highs that come from working in public relations. They make all the long hours, difficulties, and stress of the job worth the effort.
If you’re in the industry, you’re sure to relate. If you’re about to step into PR as a career, take a peek at what you can look forward to.
1. Seeing your media stories published and aired.
Being part of what made major news is a huge thrill. I never get sick of it. I get a kick out of seeing the marriage between journalism and PR at work: the right angle at the perfect time to create a story that gels.
2. Your idea for a publicity campaign brought to life.
Watching what started as scribble during a “light-bulb moment” in a team brainstorming session blossom into the launch of a campaign and seeing public energy and appreciation for your work make all those late nights worth it.
3. Post-event drinks with the organizing crew.
It feels great when your feet are wrecked and you can finally take a load off, but it feels even better when everyone is still buzzing from the success of the event. Here’s where PR pros can share a laugh about what could have gone wrong, but didn’t.
4. When your client sees the difference PR is making to their business.
In some industries, PR is occasionally viewed as the icing that the cake could easily go without when purses are tightened. I’ve been fortunate to work with clients that appreciate the value of PR and see it as the egg that holds their businesses together and helps them rise. (I also like cake.)
5. The growth of a social media community.
Seeing a social media fan base start at zero and evolve into an online community that self-regulates and actively participates with the brand is quite something. As a community grows and engages, the brand begins to speak for itself. It becomes alive. It’s really rewarding to see that growth when it’s a direct result of your campaigns and strategy.

6. The successful pitch.
The biggest buzz for me still comes from pitches. You start with a blank slate, do research and conduct multiple brainstorming sessions, work through creative frustration as you near the ‘big idea,’ and then feel absolute elation when you nail it.
