Thousands of Snapchat photos leaked through third-party app
“The Snappening,” or the posting of Snapchat users’ photos gained through a security breach, affected many recently. The mobile app isn’t taking the blame, though.
Thirteen gigabytes of Snapchat photos that were supposed to self-destruct were hacked, and you know who isn’t taking the blame? Snapchat.
The company has a point, since the photos taken belonged to an estimated 200,000 users of an unauthorized web-based third-party app. The photos were then uploaded to Internet forum 4chan and taken down soon after, presumably because some of the photos depicted children under 18 in states of undress.
Still, we should probably still take this opportunity to remind you that in May, the company admitted that supposedly deleted snaps were never actually deleted .
VentureBeat posits that it was either a Snapsave or SnapSaved server that was hacked. SnapSaved confirmed it was hacked and apologized in a Facebook post Saturday.
