After incredibly awkward Martin Short interview, Kathie Lee offers apology

The ‘Today’ co-host asked the comedian how many years he had been married, not knowing his wife died nearly two years ago.

The co-host of the “Today” show’s vino-filled fourth hour must’ve had a solid buzz going on Tuesday when she talked to guest Martin Short about his loving relationship with his wife Nancy Dolman.

The two of you “have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business,” she said. “How many years are you in love with her now?” Ordinarily, that’d be a nice gesture—except Nancy passed away in 2010 of ovarian cancer.

Short maintained his composure and didn’t mention his wife’s passing, instead telling Gifford that they were married 36 years and that he was still “madly, madly in love.” When the show went to commercial break Gifford realized the error and apologized on the air and via Twitter:

I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.
