Hotspot blocking continues to trouble Marriott critics
The hotel chain insists that the practice is meant to prevent cyber attacks against customers, but many still aren’t satisfied with that explanation.
Smartphone users are hopping mad at Marriott.
Back in August, Marriott petitioned the FCC to ask for permission to use Wi-Fi jammers to restrict guests’ access to their personal Wi-Fi networks, which originate from their phones. Three months ago, the Federal Communications Commission fined the hotel chain $600,000 for blocking guests’ access to personal Wi-Fi hotspots at a Nashville hotel.
In the weeks since, dozens of people have filed complaints on the FCC website , so last week, Marriott issued a statement that read, in part:
