The social media search for info on the Philippines earthquake
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council directed followers to PDF updates, while the (unfunded) U.S. Geological Survey’s account remained dormant.
Though the details were not entirely clear in the morning hours, Twitter users offered an outpouring of support for that country, whose national soccer team won the Peace Cup on Tuesday.

The hashtag #PrayForThePhilippines was a trending topic Tuesday morning.
One organization that offered little about the quake was the U.S. Geological Survey, which has largely been unfunded during the federal government shutdown. Though the organization did post a summary page about the earthquake to its website, it consisted largely of boilerplate information. On Twitter, the USGS account has been silent since Oct. 1.
