Trade association in damage control mode after NYT’s nail salon articles

The Professional Beauty Association issued a statement defending the integrity of salon owners. Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York has ordered a task force to conduct investigations of individual salons.

The New York Times last week published a two-part investigative series on the poor state of nail salons. The stories (“The Price of Nails” and “Perfect Nails, Poisoned Workers“) detailed harsh, unsafe working conditions and illegal business practices that include not paying workers fair wages.

That didn’t sit well with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ordered emergency measures over the weekend to address the issues outlined in the New York Times piece.

Those measures include “a new, multiagency task force,” according to the Times, that will “conduct salon-by-salon investigations, institute new rules that salons must follow to protect manicurists from the potentially dangerous chemicals found in nail products, and begin a six-language education campaign to inform them of their rights.”
