SCS’ Heather Broscious on what’s working heading into 2022

This senior VP of brand solutions shares how she is navigating new work norms, client expectations and an uncertain year ahead.

For Heather Broscious, a successful start to the day is a mix of gratitude and caffeine.

It’s a potent combination for communicators looking to meet the challenges of the days ahead after a huge couple of years of growth. Business leaders have never been more invested in the communications role—and productive, active PR pros have much to be thankful for!

We recently caught up with Broscious, senior vice president of Brand Solutions at SCS, to get her take on what has been working in 2021 and what to expect in the year ahead.

Here’s what she had to say as part of our ongoing “Day in the Life” series:

1. What’s the first thing you do every day when you wake up?

Broscious: I’ve tried to maintain a habit of taking five minutes to acknowledge things I’m grateful for…and then right to the coffee machine! I’ve found this mindset, plus taking a few minutes for myself, helps me stay centered for whatever comes each day.

2. Who is the most important person you talk to every day?

Broscious: My husband. He happens to have experience in the marketing world, so he’s always a solid sounding board for me personally and professionally.

  1. When do you plan to go back into the office? Do you want to go back? 

 Broscious: I’ve been going in a few days a week to break up my routine of being at home and be able to meet with a few people in person. Having the option of an office for a hybrid schedule is great, especially since collaboration is key for agency teams and clients.

4. What’s a new tool you have discovered that you just can’t live without?

Broscious: This isn’t necessarily a new tool, but my previous company didn’t use Slack. This was life changing for me as a collaboration tool!

5. What was your favorite work memory from the past year? 

Broscious: We have a really unique relationship with one of our clients, and she graciously invited our agency team and her team to have an outdoor BBQ at her house this summer. It was awesome for our team to see each other in person to enjoy food and drinks after work, but the best part was taking a step back to appreciate the authentic (and fun) relationships we’ve built with our client team.

6. What has been the biggest “lesson learned” from 2020? 

Broscious: 2020 taught me a lot of lessons, but the first one that comes to mind is greater resiliency and what that means for me. I’ve always been prepared with backup plans (c’mon, we’re in marketing!), but I had to figure out what works for me to become even more resilient than I thought I was—whether it’s related to work or in my personal life.

7. What’s your No.1 message to clients, co-workers or employees for 2021?

Broscious: Sounds cheesy, but “We’re in this together.” A pandemic certainly puts more pressure on anyone’s normal routine, but no matter what people are dealing with, trust and empathy are key to any successful relationship. We’re all human!

8. What makes you hopeful about the future of the Communications/PR industry? 

Broscious: We have so much opportunity for influence! This industry is full of talented creative, adaptable, determined and innovative changemakers. The platform and means to communicating will continue to evolve, but the art of communicating a compelling, relevant message will never die. It just evolves. St
