Egyptian president ousted; Twitter erupts

A mix of serious social criticism and goofy jokes about President Mohamed Morsy dominated the social site Wednesday afternoon.

The second news of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy’s ouster from power hit news outlets Wednesday afternoon, “Morsy” and the alternative spelling “Morsi” hit Twitter’s trending topics. The response was an interesting mix of pride, media criticism, political commentary, and, of course, silliness.

Quite a few of the tweets were direct responses to the official @EgyPresidency Twitter account, which was defiant throughout the afternoon:

Pres. Morsy: Armed Forces announcement is rejected by all free men who struggled for a civil democratic Egypt.

Lots of Twitter users simply retweeted that account’s statements urging people to reject the military coup, others added brief comments:
