As feds probe Theranos, its CEO goes into damage control mode

The SEC and U.S. Attorney’s Office are investigating the pioneering blood lab. Chief Executive Elizabeth Holmes, however, insists she’ll be presenting at an industry confab in August.

Others have called the 32-year-old founder of Silicon-Valley based Theranos “cocky” and have criticized her lack of transparency with reporters, regulators and researchers.

That lack of transparency and that cockiness might be drawing to a quick close.

USA Today reports that the blood-testing pioneer has come under federal investigation, as was disclosed in a memo to the company’s partners:

“The investigations by the SEC [Securities and Exchange Commission] and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which began following the publication of certain news articles, are focused on requesting documents and ongoing,” the statement read. “The company continues to work closely with regulators and is cooperating fully with all investigations.”
