Every weekday, PR Daily associate editor Alan Pearcy highlights the day’s most compelling stories and amusing marginalia on the Web in this, #TheDailySpin.
What do you get when you gather the world’s best athletes in the same close-quarters every two years? If you answered “the Olympics,” we’ll give you partial credit, but the answer we’re looking for is “
a lot of sex.” And thanks to Durex, it will be of the safe variety (we assume). The company
gave 150,000 condoms to the apparently sex-crazed athletes at the London Games—that’s about 15 each—which is 50 percent more than were handed out in Beijing. It’s hard to imagine they have enough time to break from
all their sex-capades to make their respective events.
Nevertheless, and despite
earlier reports, it
was not the athletes’ arrival to the Olympic Village that crashed the infamous gay male app Grindr this past week.
Regardless of sexual orientation, if you have XY chromosomes,
AskMen hopes the results of its
2012 Great Male Survey accurately breaks through any testosterone barriers to reveal what really makes men tick.
One tidbit the survey disclosed is that 75 percent of men have stolen office supplies. Hopefully, none of them swiped Milton’s staple. The muttering “Office Space” doof is back, this time in a new
“Matrix” mash-up that’s going viral.
Let’s hope pimple-popping videos aren’t the next viral phenom. Although most guys try to play it cool about skincare, they’re often equally as concerned as ladies about keeping all their pretty in tip-top form when it comes to acne. However, as
Oxy’s new “Man-Sized Problems” spot demonstrates, it ain’t easy being beautiful.
It also ain’t easy resisting the rich aromas of freshly brewed coffee—something the marketing team behind Dunkin’ Donuts is banking on in South Korea, where the company has
installed aromatic sprayers on buses that provide passengers with the wondrous scent of coffee’s allure each time the brand’s jingle plays over the radio.
Meanwhile, Snickers has taken the allure of ice cream to Twitter, offering consumers the
chance to win 1,000 of its ice cream bars by tweeting to
@SnickersIceCrm about how they’d share their cool treats amid the summer heat.
Hollywood also took to Twitter to
share its respect for Sherman Hemsley after news spread that “The Jeffersons” star had passed away. He was 74.
Back Alley Waffles in Washington met its fate as well. The eatery was
forced to close its doors due to what it claims are the bad business practices of online deal site Groupon. Eggos it is.
Conversely, the doors were opened to the West Wing of the White House
where two new campaign ads were filmed for President Obama.
And finally, I’d like to extend my sincerest apologies for failing to report that Tuesday was National Tequila Day. Hopefully,
these tequila recipes from People magazine will make up for my oversight.
