According to a survey of 438 TVWeek.com and NewsPro readers, Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is the top journalism school in the country.
Syracuse beat Northwestern’s Medill, Columbia University, University of Missouri at Columbia, and USC’s Annenberg School.
Among the issues raised in the survey were the basic skills that some communicators—not just reporters—are lacking as they finish college:
“Several respondents said schools should be teaching more ‘digital or new media.’ At the same time, a number of respondents praised journalism schools for doing just that, indicating all J-schools seem to have risen to meet that challenge in the past few years.”
Other respondents called for more grammar classes while others called for a greater emphasis on objectivity.
Here’s the list of the top 10 J-schools, according to the poll:
1. Syracuse University
2. Northwestern University
3. Columbia University
4. University of Missouri at Columbia
5. University of Southern California
6. Arizona State University
7. New York University
8. University of California at Berkeley
9. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
10. George Washington University
