Another Olympian booted for racist tweet

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: July 31, 2012
PR Daily on Monday highlighted five social media triumphs from the 2012 London Olympics. And now for the flip side: Another Olympian has been expelled from the games for a racist tweet.

Hours after the Swiss soccer team lost to South Korea, Swiss defender Michel Morganella tweeted: “I want to beat up all South Koreans! Bunch of mentally handicapped retards!” (He wrote the tweet in a “garbled form of French,” according to the Associated Press.)

Morganella’s Twitter account has been removed since the tweet was sent.

Although Morganella issued a muted apology—saying he was “sincerely sorry” and that he made a “huge error”—the Swiss team sent him home because he violated the International Olympic Committee’s code of conduct.

Morganella is the second athlete to get booted from the London Olympics due to Twitter. Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou mocked African immigrants in a tweet last week. She apologized for the tweet, but her nation’s Olympic committee expelled her from the team.
