A popular grocery store is facing some backlash after firing an employee who had a physical altercation with a thief.
A Kroger manager was fired after he confronted an alleged knife-wilding shoplifter in the parking lot.
From Yahoo News
A customer in the parking lot of the Kroger recorded the incident on their cellphone. In the video, you can see the unnamed manager approach the shoplifting suspect. The suspect appears to have a knife in his hand. The manager shoves him into a parked car and gets the knife out the suspect’s hand before eventually slamming him down to the ground.
Despite the man’s efforts, the 13-year Kroger veteran was given the boot. Kroger issued the following statement to a local Dallas news station: “The incident…is not a reflection of our company’s fraud prevention protocol, procedures or training…He is no longer employed by our company.”
The public hasn’t taken kindly to the firing, evidenced by a good majority of the nearly 17,000 comments on Yahoo’s story.
While the manager seems to have been in the wrong by confronting the shoplifter, several think he should be lauded for wrestling a dangerous knife enthusiast to the ground. For example, one commenter named Luke said, “Someone at Kroger needs to have his head examined.”
Several commenters pointed out that other retail chains have similar policies, however.
