Photoshop: Helpful image editing tool or the devil incarnate, showing everyone how what a desperately vapid and hollow society we live in?
Adobe’s 24-year-old software has become quite polarizing in recent years. It’s being used to alter the bodies and faces of celebrities to look perfect, while us normal slugs have no choice but to feel bad about our most trivial imperfections.
A quick Google news search of the phrase “Photoshop” will likely reveal at least a couple of negative stories about some unnamed designer who used the tool for evil. For example, there’s this recent Target bikini model
, who was Photoshopped so poorly that it ended up on Photoshop Disasters
, a website dedicated to the worst of the worst.
But Adobe would like you to kindly remember that the Photoshop software can (and is often) used for good. In a statement to Mashable
, the company said:
Adobe Photoshop has made and continues to make a profound impact on our visual culture. Creative people all over the world have pushed publishing, art, and visual media forward using techniques that were either too complex or simply not possible before Photoshop. Like lots of technologies — indeed lots of products — Photoshop can be used in some unexpected, perhaps questionable ways, in a free society.
As a symptom of the anti-Photoshop backlash, some brands are touting the fact that they use un-touched images in their advertisements, like Aerie lingerie
. Dove had one of last year’s most memorable campaigns with its “Real Beauty
So, Adobe has a challenge. While some would like to make one of its most recognizable brand names synonymous with being misleading and hurtful to society, they still need people to realize that it’s used for more than altering body images.

Bottom line: Don’t blame Photoshop. If it hadn’t been Photoshop, it would have been some other editing software driving our society into despair.
