Ben & Jerry’s responds to criticism of ice cream name

The Vermont brand’s representatives stood by its product flavor ‘Hazed and Confused,’ despite recent complaints it supported unsafe college rituals.

Ben and Jerry’s will keep the flavor name “Hazed and Confused” despite some criticism and calls for change.

The issue is a perceived reference to the college fraternity practice of hazing, which has led to deaths and untold amounts of humiliation in the name of brotherhood.

Unilever, which owns Ben and Jerry’s, took a look at the marketing and concluded that there was nothing about the product that “condoned hazing, supported hazing, or even inferred hazing,” according to Bloomberg.

The name actually is a play on the phrase “dazed and confused,” subbing “hazed” because of the hazelnut fudge core.
