Twitter users welcome Pope Benedict to the site in bizarre ways

By Kevin Allen | Posted: December 4, 2012
One of the most famous men in the world will soon tweet. Pope Benedict plans to send his first tweet Dec. 12. from the handle @pontifex.

The handle has yet to be verified, but the Vatican on Monday confirmed the handle, which has more than 135,000 followers as of 11 am ET.

So, what will a holy tweet look like?

It will be “spiritual” in nature and come from the pontiff himself.

“All the pope's tweets are the pope's words,” Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican, said during a news conference. “Nobody is going to be putting words into his mouth.”

The pope will also answer questions that include the hashtag #askpontifex.

While Pope Benedict will actually be the one sending the first week, his aides will be executing them in the future with approval from His Holiness.

Naturally, there have been an insane amount of hateful tweets directed toward the account already. Twitchy has a collection of the most vile.

By the looks of posts tagged #askpontifex, the Vatican social media team is going to have a tough time sifting through them to find any legitimate questions. The first that popped up it a search was from “America’s transgender sweetheart,” asking whether the pope had seen any of her videos.

There are some legitimate questions, however, like the one from @sebpatrick: “#askpontifex Who would win in a fight between Jesus Christ and Wolverine?”

Welcome to Twitter, your Holiness.
