Pinterest opens to third-party apps

Earlier this summer, Pinterest opened its API to a select group of developers, which led to integrations with companies like Polyvore, IFTTT and Topshop. But now all developers will have a chance to integrate Pinterest into their websites and applications without the need for prior approval.

Pinterest software engineer Zack Argyle provided details in a blog post on the company’s engineering blog:

Once you’ve read and agreed to our terms and policies, you’ll be able to add a select number of testers and collaborators to help you build your app. After someone authenticates, you’ll get access to their Pins, boards, profiles and follows. If you have the ID of the object, you can retrieve its information—otherwise, you can fetch info for authenticated users.

Pinterest will need to approve any apps that use the API, and thousands already have.
