Survivors of the deadly tornado in Joplin, Mo., tapped social media to communicate. The images from this southwestern Missouri town are horrifying— houses flattened, windows of a hospital blown out, and a helicopter flipped on its side. At last count, 89 people were confirmed dead. The twister, potentially one of the top 10 deadliest of all time, knocked down phone lines, causing many survivors to take to social media and text messaging to let loved ones know they were all right. The Red Cross created a Web page for survivors to check in, as many Twitter users spent the morning tweeting their condolences.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn hires PR firm. The former IMF chief accused of sexual assault in New York has tapped the services of TD International, a firm run by ex-CIA agents and U.S. diplomats.
