Report: Average person spends $116 on Valentine’s Day stuff

Many top brands are tapping social media to encourage lovers to open their wallets wider this year. Have any social networks inspired your Valentine’s shopping?

According to USA Today, the average person will spend $116 on Valentine’s Day merchandise, up 12.8 percent from last year. That’s $15.7 billion on candy hearts, chocolates, rose, etc., according to the National Retail Federation.

Many brands are tapping social media to encourage lovers to open their wallets this year. The biggest names marketing on social media this Valentine’s Day: toy-maker Mattel, Victoria’s Secret, CBS, and Mulberry.
