Tesco stays silent amid reports chain will cut up to 10,000 jobs

Tesco will reportedly cut as many as 10,000 jobs in the coming months as it closes 43 stores and axes 6,000 employees from its corporate headquarters. Tesco has not confirmed the extent of the cuts.

Layoffs are one of the most difficult things to communicate both internally and externally. Reveal too much—or too little—and speculation runs rampant, panic sets in among employees and morale is decimated.

In this case, Tesco is steering clear of confirming figures because it appears that the number is still undetermined. From The Telegraph:

The company began consultations with staff at the end of January. Head office employees have been offered the chance to apply for voluntary redundancy. The final number of job losses will be determined by the result of the consultation process and whether in-store staff accept alternative roles.
