American Apparel’s ‘period tee’ raises ire (images NSFW)

Some of the proceeds from the sale of the T-shirt go toward a women’s art project, but critics say its imagery of menstruation goes too far.

The $32 “Period Tee” designed by 20-year-old Toronto artist and former American Apparel employee Petra Collins is exactly what it sounds like: It’s emblazoned with a large drawing of a vagina with menstrual blood.

On Sunday, American Apparel announced on Facebook that the shirt, along with two others designed by Collins, were back in stock after initially selling out. The comments on that post are all rather complimentary—the only complaints are about a photo credit. Of course, that may be because the shirt in the Facebook photo, which features a girl in a T-shirt that says “loser,” is the one that’s clearly the least likely to offend. (The third shirt in the series has a photo of a woman in a wet T-shirt.)
