American Petroleum Institute busted for starting 27 fake Twitter accounts

Instead of putting in the hard work to cultivate a base of brand advocates on Twitter, I can just cut corners and create a fleet of fake users to tout my company.

If so, I hope your personal code of ethics kicked in and you thought better of it.

Sadly, that’s not the case for the folks at the American Petroleum Institute. They’ve been accused of setting up 14 fake Twitter accounts to resemble normal people who frequently tweet in support of a proposed TransCanada pipeline.
