China blamed for recent cyber attack exposing millions of U.S. workers’ data
More than four million former and current federal employees were affected by the hacking. Chinese officials called the accusations ‘irresponsible and unscientific.’
The Office of Personnel Management was targeted in the attack. The organization holds information pertaining to government security clearances and employees’ personal information, including Social Security numbers.
The New York Times reports that the objective appears to be unclear, along with whether the breach was state-sponsored. Michael McCaul, chairman of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee spoke out on CBS’s “Face the Nation” and said he thought Chinese hackers are responsible, and The Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post have all cited unnamed officials who claim China is behind the hack.
