Ever the showman, N.Y. Times tech critic David Pogue delights corporate communicators with humor and insight into what technology giveth—and can taketh away

And you think you’ve got problems with IT.

Ragan’s Social Media for Communicators conference was set to kick off with a bang Thursday when New York Times technology critic David Pogue bounded onto the stage, punched a few keys on his computer and … nothing.

Perhaps it was fitting that with 650 communicators eagerly awaiting his remarks and the Wynn Hotel’s IT staff scrambling to fix the glitch, Pogue turned decidedly low-tech to talk about the perils and pluses of social media.

Theater major that he was, Pogue told a joke, played the piano, sang a song and adlibbed his way through the opening minutes of his presentation. And when the ballroom’s three giant screens finally came to life, the early-morning crowd erupted in applause and then settled in for an hour’s worth of humor, insight and advice about technology and its impact on communications.
