J&J comes out fighting, vows to appeal $55M talcum cancer verdict

The health care conglomerate has lost its second jury trial stemming from cases of ovarian cancer after women’s prolonged use of talc. Communicators are in front of the story.

The headlines didn’t look good, but communicators at Johnson and Johnson didn’t take long to head off the bad PR.

News broke Tuesday that a jury in St. Louis had awarded a woman $55 million after she developed ovarian cancer from decades of talcum powder use. This was the second jury trial loss this year for J&J. In February, the family of an Alabama woman who succumbed to the disease under similar circumstances was awarded $72 million.

This week’s legal defeat prompted Carol Goodrich, spokesperson for Johnson & Johnson Consumer, to post a statement on the company website:
