Product recalls abound in food industry

Many PR pros know the stress that surrounds a product recall. Having to take a popular item off the shelves can be costly, as brand managers for several companies recently learned.

Recent product recalls are causing major headaches for a few well-known food brands.

The first involves Mars Inc., which was forced to recall several of its chocolate products in 55 countries after plastic was found in a Snickers bar in Germany. The plastic posed a potential choking hazard.

“We cannot be sure that this plastic was only in that particular Snickers,” Mars said in statement. “We do not want any products on the market that may not meet our quality requirements, so we decided to take them all back.” RELATED: Free download: 10 ways to enliven senior executives’ communications

There’s no word on how much the recall will cost Mars, but it’ll probably be in the millions. The U.S. market is not among those involved in the recall.
