Facebook: Sorry for deleting do-it-yourself abortion post

The social network apologized to a reproductive rights activist in Europe after deleting her post that contained instructions for conducting an abortion. Can the mea culpa help Facebook avoid a PR hit?

This morning, word has spread across Twitter and media outlets that the social network apologized to reproductive rights activist Rebecca Gomperts, after it deleted her photo that contained written instructions for performing a do-it-yourself abortion. The social network claimed the post violated its Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.

In a note to Gomperts, Facebook said:

“The photo that was removed from your profile is not in violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, and appears to have been removed in error. We do apologize for the removal of this content and the subsequent warning that you received.”
