Illinois governor’s office slammed for posters that degrade Hispanics

Why not celebrate Hispanic Heritage month with a caricature of a grinning Latino in a sombrero? UPDATE: A spokesperson for the governor’s office called it a mistake.

ChicagoNow blogger Kikisbetes points out a prime example of this, which comes from the Illinois Governor’s Chicago office. This Friday, the office plans to host a lunch that features traditional Hispanic foods. Posters advertising the lunch feature a smiling Latino with a thick mustache and a sombrero.

The blogger snapped a photo and posted it to her social media circles. one of her friends called it insulting, degrading and offensive. Kikisbetes explains further:

“After seeing all of this so often and so much, sometimes you just have to laugh at it. Although, it is true. What does the little man with the mustache and sombrero have to do with me?”
