Lordy, lordy, the communication method we all know and love/hate is turning 40. The first email—then quaintly referred to as an “electronic message”—was sent in 1971.

Since then, there have been countless innovations, upgrades, and technological advancements in email. The word has been shortened from electronic mail to e-mail to (in accordance with an Associated Press style update this year) simply email.
