Is Germany’s PR industry ready for the social media boom?

German public relations pros gathered in Munich to discuss the profession’s evolving role.

A Pew Research study noted that only 1 percent of German Internet users tweet, compared with 8 percent of Americans.

“We Germans are different—we take our time to make up our mind about new things,” Annette Wiedemann, of AtomicPR, wrote. “Although the social Web is as hot a topic in Germany as it is just about everywhere, Germans are hesitant.”

However, she also noted that Germans are increasingly turning to social media.

“The number of internet users aged 10 years and above has increased slightly to 3 in 4 Germans in 2010; the number of people using Facebook has skyrocketed in 2010 to 43 percent of internet users making it the No. 1 social network in Germany, and the number of Twitter accounts has more than doubled in the last 12 months.”
