‘Mad Men’ creator talks diversity and advertising’s ‘PR problem’

Not only is the industry still a ‘white person’s world,’ said Matthew Weiner, but it also just makes people mad sometimes.

The AMC show’s creator, Matthew Weiner, had a conversation with author A.M. Homes on stage as part of the New Museum’s Visionaries Series about how advertising itself has long had a diversity problem, among other topics.

Weiner said the show’s characters would probably not have had many encounters with minorities.

From Advertising Age:

“It’s a shameful past,” he said. “We tried to find a picture of a department store for when we were doing Menken’s department store and there was the black department store and the white department store.”

The even more unfortunate truth, he said, is that advertising remains a white person’s world today.
