Business blogger sounds a death knell for PR

Grant Cardone, who has had a beef with PR for years, tells entrepreneurs they can do their own promotion on social media. Does this outspoken stance spell trouble for the industry?

Declaring “PR is dead to me!” in a recent post for Entrepreneur, Cardone picks up where he left off in a 2011 takedown of the industry at The Huffington Post. This time, the self-styled sales expert tells business owners to just ditch their PR firm and become their own PR machine. Post your own Tweets and YouTube videos. Stream your own broadcasts.

Cardone went to great lengths to boost his case, hiring five PR firms at the same time a year ago and giving each the same assignment—”produce results for me.” Meanwhile, he was churning out his own content on every Web-based tool available and then compared his results against those from the PR firms. The outcome was hardly a surprise to Cardone, who wrote:

“I’ve posted more than 1,900 videos on YouTube with more than 14.6 million views, streamed more than 1,000 broadcasts over Meerkat, Periscope and Facebook, posted almost 70,000 Tweets and I bang on every other platform available to me. All while the well-connected PR firm that knows so much about public relations can’t even get me an interview—I’m making the news while they’re making excuses.”
