Naked Prince Harry pics create PR conundrum for Royals, Vegas

Although the queen must be mortified at the pictures that surfaced today, the British people (on Twitter) love it. But does it hurt Sin City’s slogan?

Prince Harry must keep the royal PR team awake at night.

His list of indiscretions is well-documented and, in some cases, mind-boggling:

• At the age of 17, he was nabbed smoking pot behind a pub.
• He once wore a swastika armband to a party.
• The strapping prince was caught on video playfully uttering screeds such as “raghead” and “Paki” as well as referring to the color of his nether regions.
• When he was 20, he got into a scrape with a photographer outside a London nightclub.

So it seems his latest high-profile misstep was inevitable: Nude pictures. published two shots of the man who’s third-in-line to the British throne in the buff during his highly publicized vacation this week to Las Vegas. And they weren’t snapped by some peeping Tom pap, but caught by a cell phone camera after the 27-year-old finished a game of strip billiards in a hotel suite—a game that he apparently lost.

(You can see the pics here.)

Not only are the pictures a surprise, but also the official reaction from Prince Charles and co.

Clarence House, the residence of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry, confirmed to AFP that images were legit.

“At this time we don’t have a comment,” a spokesman said, adding. “We may do later.”

According to AFP, it’s rare for Clarence House to confirm such a thing.

Although the U.K. press is questioning the security around Prince Harry, as well as his behavior, some of the British people (the ones on Twitter, at least) seem to love his latest antics.

In London, Prince Harry is a trending topic on Twitter.

Twitter feed @ItsOhSoBritish remarked: “Got to love Prince Harry ;)”

CNN host (and former U.K. tabloid reporter) Piers Morgan tweeted: “I’m shocked and disgusted by the Prince Harry party photos in Vegas. Why the hell wasn’t I invited????”

And the Prince Harry parody account on Twitter chimed in, tweeting (among other things): “Whatever happened to, ‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas’?”

Indeed, the news of Prince Harry partying in Sin City—video emerged yesterday of the royal racing swimming royalty Ryan Lochte in a Vegas pool (Harry lost, badly)—is drumming up scads of free press worldwide for the vacation spot.

However, as the faux Prince Harry asked on Twitter, does it dent the city’s well-known branding campaign?

One Twitter users commented: “Prince Harry just DESTROYED a decade of expensive branding. He’s lucky Las Vegas isn’t mobbed up anymore.”

So far, the Las Vegas Twitter feed is mum. We’ll see if it weighs in. This could be an opportunity for some cheeky fun.

As for Prince Harry, he’s reportedly en route to the U.K. to face the music—which might hurt more than his hangover. As Tom Sykes, the Royalist blogger for The Daily Beast, said on Twitter: “Harry will laugh it off, but it’s a disaster for Charles. [He] has spent the last year firing all minor royals, now his star employee does this.”
