Such is the lesson that a Philippines presidential candidate, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, is learning.
Duterte recently told a story at a campaign rally that involved Australian missionary Jacqueline Hamill. The 36-year-old missionary was working in Davao’s prison when an inmate riot broke out. Hamill was taken hostage, raped and killed during the riot.
The story came with a punch line, of sorts—Duterte finished the comment by saying that when he saw Hamill’s face, he thought he “should have been first” to rape her.
