Study says Occupy Wall Street protesters are young, poor, and engaged in social media

The official (or unofficial—who knows?) website for the movement published data on Wednesday to suggest that most (70 percent) of its supporters consider themselves politically independent (while a little more than 27 percent are Democrats and 2.4 percent are Republican).

Héctor R. Cordero-Guzmán, PhD, a sociologist at the City University of New York, analyzed data compiled on the OWS site, and made the following observations about their social media use:

• 66.4 percent in the sample agree somewhat or strongly that they regularly use Facebook;
• 28.9 percent in the sample agree somewhat or strongly that they regularly use Twitter;
• 73.9 percent in the sample agree somewhat or strongly that they regularly use YouTube.
