Syracuse fires assistant coach accused of child sexual abuse

‘The events of the past week have shaken us,’ Syracuse Chancellor Nancy Cantor says in the wake of new evidence against longtime assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine.

In the latter case, Bernie Fine, the school’s longtime assistant basketball coach, has been accused of molesting three boys. Two of the accusers are former Syracuse ball boys.

Fine has denied the allegations, and when they first emerged his immediate boss, Syracuse’s head basketball coach Jim Boeheim, defended Fine.

“Bernie has my full support,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the university placed him on administrative leave. On Sunday night, Syracuse fired Fine.

“Frankly, the events of the past week have shaken us all,” Syracuse Chancellor Nancy Cantor said in a statement issued on Sunday evening.
