Top 10 tweets of 2011

Every year, Twitter compiles a list of the year’s top tweets based on their level of impact, resonance and relevance. The company takes “…into account the big stories that first broke on Twitter—not by news agencies—but by people looking to share a photo, a thought, or a moment in time with people they may never meet,” an article on ABCNews.com says.

Without any further ado, here are the tweets deemed worthy of top honors for 2011:

1. “Welcome back Egypt #Jan25” Wael Ghonim, a marketing manager at Google, became a symbol of Egypt’s revolution. The Egyptian government held him captive for nearly 12 days for organizing protests.

2. “Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event).” A local resident of Abbottabad, Pakistan unknowingly tweeted the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound before any news agency could break the story.

3. “my daughter her name is sarah m. rivera” Homeless New York City resident Daniel Morales used a prepaid cell phone to tweet his phone number and a picture of his daughter. Father and daughter were reunited when she called him the next day.
