Vodka brands stand up for marriage equality

Absolut and Smirnoff vodka brands on Tuesday swapped their usual Facebook cover photos with images in support of same-sex marriage.

We’ve got ourselves a good ol’ fashioned gay marriage support-off. In the battle to determine the most gay-friendly vodka brand, it’s Absolut vs. Smirnoff.

Vodka maker Absolut has always made it a habit of injecting its marketing efforts into the Zeitgeist. And in a that’s-so-Oreo move today, the company came out strong in support of gay marriage rights with a custom graphic on its Facebook page. It depicts a bottle of Absolute draped in red cloth with the copy, “Today, red stands for marriage equality. SHARE this and spread the word.”

The image has gotten mostly positive comments and more than 2,000 shares.

The move is reminiscent of Oreo, which issued a graphic of a rainbow-colored cookie during Gay Pride Week last June. That sparked an unsuccessful boycott from anti-gay marriage groups.

Several Twitter and Facebook users across the country changed their profile photos to a red and white equal sign as the U.S. Supreme Court begins its hearings about the hot-button issue.

Not to be outdone, Smirnoff entered the conversation with its own clever post, which features pairs of martini glasses and rocks glasses together, with the caption, “Every pairing is perfect.”

Your move, Finlandia … or Stoli … or Ketel One … probably not Belvedere … but maybe Grey Goose?
