Most PR and communications pros have had to sit through countless presentations and speeches. Some we remember and some we don’t. If we ourselves are faced with the task of presenting to an audience, we definitely don’t want to be forgotten. We want our message to make an impact. How can PR pros make their presentations interesting and engaging, short of doing what Bill and Ted did and showing up in a time machine? Here are a few suggestions to help make your presentation stand out from the pack.
Research, research, research.
First off, a presenter must know and understand his or her audience. It’s a good idea to research your audience’s background and ultimately, what makes the listeners tick. Tailor your speech specifically to them and use terms that they understand.
Secondly, and more importantly, make sure you know what you’re talking about forward and backward. State supporting evidence in an easy-to-understand manner. Your knowledge and insight will shine through, and you’ll come across as more confident, especially during the question-and-answer portion.
Be likeable and approachable.
