Newsrooms today are smaller and reporters are covering more subjects they don’t know extremely well. But this could actually be an advantage for PR pros that have something useful to offer.
A good pitch can help a reporter understand their topic faster.
“There are fewer (reporters) and they’re stretched very thin, often covering a wide range of topics, sometimes topics outside of their expertise,” said April Yue, assistant professor of mass communication, advertising and public relations at Boston University, during Ragan’s Public Relations Certificate Course. “So this means that we sometimes need to be more patient, creative and willing to provide more context, and sometimes that includes explaining an industry or a product from the ground up.”
