Barbie quits SeaWorld

Mattel announced recently it would not renew its contract with the theme-park brand, and activists are calling the decision a victory.

The company announced last week that its license with SeaWorld will not be renewed, and SeaWorld Barbie will need to find a new job.

Neither party has confirmed whether this has anything to do with round after round of backlash that SeaWorld has faced in the wake of the “Blackfish” documentary. That film confirmed what logic has probably told most of the park’s visitors over the years: Essentially, orcas shouldn’t be kept in swimming pools.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund offered its opinion on the move, with attorney Carter Dillard telling The Huffington Post, “I’d say it was always a bad idea to teach children that the best way to treat magnificent wild creatures is to capture them, house them in the equivalent of a bathtub, and force them to perform. It looks like Mattel finally agrees.”

For its part, Mattel offered little explanation, simply confirming to NBC News that “a number of factors go into a decision like that.”
