It’s no secret that resilient employees are the most fulfilled in the workplace. But that can certainly mean different things to different employees.

Despite these differences, are ways organizations can cultivate a work environment that allows employees to feel like they’re thriving and not just surviving.

Speaking at Ragan’s Employee Communications & Culture Conference, Shira Good, associate vice chancellor for communications and issues management at the University of Denver, laid the groundwork for addressing these internal issues.

One of the most critical factors for maintaining resilient employees includes defining your organization’s cultural DNA, or its vision, values, beliefs and behaviors.

“What are your core beliefs in your organization?” Good said. “Do you have a set of them? If not, think about what those core beliefs might be. In what order? What behaviors do they create, and do employees feel a sense of belonging?”

Vision and values should reflect an organization’s core beliefs, she said. They should be considered on an ongoing basis and updated to reflect any changes to the company’s principles.
