Disney unveils Rey-themed ‘Star Wars’ toys, collectibles after consumer backlash

The lead female character of ‘The Force Awakens’ was absent from many of the brand’s products for the film’s debut. People slammed for being sexist.

After several toys and other merchandise were released that omitted the movie’s female protagonist, fans went to Twitter and Facebook to call sexism on brands like Disney and Hasbro.

The #WheresRey hashtag took off and op-eds called on both brands to be more inclusive.

Disney seems to have heard the rabble loud and clear. Forbes reported that a new product line would feature the previously slighted female lead:

On Tuesday, the studio’s consumer products division unveiled new toys and collectibles the company says they ‘kept under wraps to preserve surprises for fans.’ The line ‘puts heroine Rey front and center,’ said Disney in a press release, adding that this staggered unveiling has been planned since September to protect plot points.
