Dow-funded internship organization conspicuously rejects prospects

The email addresses of every student who got a rejection message—numbering in the hundreds—were clearly visible to all. The Dow Jones News Fund blamed a technical error.

It would seem the mix-up had to involve someone’s forgetting to check a “BCC” box, but DJNF is claiming a mechanical error. When media-industry blogger Jim Romenesko contacted DJNF about the email, the organization replied with this statement:

We extend sincere apologies to the persons whose email addresses are listed in the emails. We take the application process seriously, value each applicant and appreciate having the opportunity to review their materials. Something went awry with the automated notices that clearly shouldn’t have. We will work diligently to ensure this does not recur.
