‘Frenemy?’ ‘Hashtag?’ New Scrabble dictionary adds 5,000 words

Let’s say you’re playing Scrabble and you’re trying to figure out how to use the letters “yrfneem.”

Well, you’re in luck. Starting Dec. 1, when a new dictionary for the game becomes official, the word “frenemy” will be an option.

The fifth edition of the game’s official dictionary, which goes on sale this week, includes “selfie,” “hashtag,” “emo,” “chillax,” “jockdom,” “bling,” and 5,000 other new entries, publisher Merriam-Webster announced Tuesday.

Scrabble freaks were hurling their tiles in the air in celebration of the announcement. The first major update to the dictionary in a decade will “go a long way toward bringing us closer to the language as it is currently spoken,” John Chew, co-president of the North American Scrabble Players Association, told CNN Money.
