Obama calls on nation to tweet lawmakers about raising debt ceiling

The president’s Twitter account sent roughly 100 tweets in a matter of hours on Friday encouraging people to send a message to specific GOP lawmakers. UPDATE: The president’s Twitter account lost more than 33,000 followers on Friday, presumably due to this effort.

To encourage GOP lawmakers to compromise on legislation to raise the U.S. debt ceiling—and avoid default—President Obama’s Twitter account on Friday began tweeting the names and Twitter handles of Republican holdouts.

It started with this message from the president himself:

The time for putting party first is over. If you want to see a bipartisan #compromise, let Congress know. Call. Email. Tweet. —BOless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet ReplyBarack Obama

That was followed by these messages written by a staffer:
