Senate candidate burned by reporter’s tweet

George Allen, of ‘macaca’ fame, was called out on Twitter for twice asking an African-American reporter what position he plays.

Today’s Twitter dustup comes to us courtesy of NBC Washington reporter Craig Melvin and former Virginia Sen. George Allen, who is trying to win back his Senate seat.

The implication is that Allen assumed, because Melvin is a tall African-American, that he played sports.

This from Melvin’s Twitter account:

“For the 2nd time in 5 months, fmr. gov. and sen candidate George Allen asks me, ‘what position did you play?’ I did not a play a sport.”

Allen, the son of former Washington Redskins coach George Allen, lost his reelection bid in 2006 after he called a dark-skinned young man “macaca,” which is a somewhat obscure French racial slur.
