Study: Most brands handle social media in-house

And, in most cases, it’s the marketing department that owns social media. Is that how it is at your company?

According to a recent survey, it’s largely the marketing department.

The survey was conducted at the Pivot Conference, a gathering of mostly marketing and advertising professionals in late 2010. PR pro and blogger Brian Solis shared the results on Fast Company.

Among other things, Solis reported that 52 percent of the attendees do not use an agency for their brands’ social media marketing.

The attendees were also asked which department handles social media (they were told to select all departments that apply, so the numbers do not add up to 100). Here are the results from that question:
